CATECHISTS: AGENTS OF HOPE IN A SECULAR WORLD – OYO DIOCESE EMBRACES THE JUBILEE SPIRIT
Vincent OBANIYI
In a world increasingly marked by secularism and uncertainty, Catechists have been reaffirmed as crucial agents of hope, tasked with bringing the light of Christ’s message to individuals and communities. This message was at the heart of the 2025 Oyo Diocesan Catechists’ Seminar held at St. Paul Pastoral Center, Awe, where Catechists gathered to reflect on their mission and renew their commitment.
The keynote address was delivered by Rev. Fr. Joseph ‘Wale Ogundipe, who emphasized the vital role of Catechists as bearers of hope in today’s world. Drawing from Pope John Paul II’s Catechesi Tradendae and Pope Francis’ declarations, he reiterated the Church's call for Catechists to lead others into a deeper communion with Christ.
The Directress of Religious Education for the Catholic Diocese of Oyo, Rev. Sr. Mary -Assumpta Taiwo, SSMA reiterated the fact that Catechists are not just to teach the doctrine to others but to live the faith and lead others into deeper, transformative relationship with Christ. Their role is not to share personal ideologies, but to be authentic spokespersons of the Gospel, ensuring that Christ remains at the heart of their teaching and example. As Pope Francis reminds the Church, it is Christ Himself who teaches through them.
This mission takes on renewed significance in light of the 2024 Year of Prayer, a spiritual preparation for the 2025 Jubilee Year themed “Pilgrims of Hope.” This period has been dedicated to deepening personal and communal prayer, reconnecting with God, and preparing hearts to embrace the Jubilee’s call to hope, reconciliation, and spiritual renewal.
The Jubilee, which runs from December 24, 2024, to January 6, 2026, offers a sacred opportunity for believers to embark on a pilgrimage of faith, forgiveness, and grace. With the theme anchored in Romans 5:5 – “Hope does not disappoint” – the Church seeks to reawaken confidence in God’s promises.
In the Catholic Diocese of Oyo, Catechists are seen as frontline evangelizers, particularly in fostering hope through ecumenism, interreligious dialogue, and faith education. They not only share the Gospel but nurture faith, build communities, and model Christian virtues. Understanding local pastoral challenges, Catechists in Oyo are encouraged to collaborate with clergy and fellow pastoral workers to offer effective catechesis tailored to their unique context.
The Local Ordinary of the Catholic Diocese of Oyo, Most Rev. Emmanuel Badejo had an interactive session with the Catechists and encouraged them to lead by example and deepen their knowledge of Church teachings in order to effectively guide the faithful. He praised their active participation and commitment to the Church, acknowledging their indispensable role in sustaining and spreading the faith.
The session served as both a moment of encouragement and a call to renewal, reminding the Catechists of their vital place in the Church’s journey as Pilgrims of Hope.
