Josephine Ogunkunle, a parishioner of Saint Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, Tede, emerged as the winner of the Oyo State Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN) Bible Quiz Competition.
The event took place on May 17, 2023, at First Baptist Church, Jobele, in Afijio Local Government Area. The competition featured 23 participants drawn from various local government areas across the state. Josephine proudly represented Atisbo Local Government.
Reacting to her victory, Josephine said, “When my name was announced as the winner, I was shocked and overjoyed at the same time.”
She shared insights into her preparation process, explaining that she studied at least one chapter daily from the 20 chapters of the Book of Genesis, which was the focus of the quiz. Her motivation stemmed from her impressive performances at the Church and local government levels, and most importantly, from the encouragement of her mother.
“There were times I felt like giving up, especially when my Mum wasn’t around to encourage me,” she confessed. “But I always overcame those feelings by remembering Philippians 4:13 — ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’”
Josephine also credited her prayer life as a key part of her success. “Prayers like the Holy Rosary, the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel, and the Lord’s Prayer helped me feel relieved and focused during my preparation.”
Quoting Psalm 31:3–5, she emphasized her message for fellow youths: “While aiming for excellence, a good Christian should trust and believe in God, knowing that with Him, all things are possible.”
The experience, Josephine noted, has shifted her mindset and goals. “I never thought I could win a Bible quiz because of where I came from, but this journey has shown me I can do better,” she said.
Describing herself as “dynamic,” Josephine concluded, “Throughout this journey, I learned to adapt and give my best to succeed. This quality helped me during the competition and will continue to guide me in life.”
