When Your Emotions Don’t Match Your Faith
Lilly Path with Ifeoma Odisa UGWU
Dear Sister,
It has been a while; I was dealing with emotions so no surprise I will be talking about emotions this week. Have you ever sat in Church, lifting your hands in worship, while your heart felt heavy and unsettled? Or read your Bible and believed every word yet, still battled anxiety, insecurity, or sadness?
I experienced loss recently and I have had to acknowledge the Myriads of emotions I have been feeling. Dishing out advice to others but dreading the reality of how I feel. Luckily, Prayers and God’s word are real tools for healthy Christian living. I am not totally out of the wood here but I choose to be joyful today, tomorrow and always.
So, let’s talk.
You love God.
You trust Him.
But some days, you still feel overwhelmed, disappointed, or numb.
And when your emotions don’t match your faith, you start to wonder,
“Am I doing something wrong?”
No, you’re not.
You’re human.
Faith Doesn’t Cancel Feelings
Somewhere along the line, we picked up the idea that having faith means having it all together. That if we really trusted God, we wouldn’t cry. Wouldn’t fear. Wouldn’t feel triggered, discouraged, or low.
But that’s not true.
Even Jesus felt deeply.
He wept at the tomb of Lazarus. (John 11:35)
He sweat blood in Gethsemane. (Luke 22:44)
He cried out in anguish on the Cross. (Matthew 27:46)
Your emotions don’t make you less spiritual.
They make you real.
Don’t Fake It! Face It with God
Faith isn’t about pretending everything is fine.
It’s about choosing to take everything to God even the emotions that feel “unholy.”
God wants your truth, not your performance.
So, when you feel:
- Anxious – bring your fears to Him (Philippians 4:6)
- Insecure – let Him remind you of your identity (Isaiah 43:1)
- Disappointed – talk to Him honestly, like Hannah did when she cried bitterly (1 Samuel 1:10)
Healing starts when you stop hiding your heart from the One who created it.
Faith Isn’t Always Loud
Some days, faith is quiet.
It’s getting out of bed when it’s hard.
It’s reading your Bible when it feels dry.
It’s choosing to believe that God is still working, even when your feelings say otherwise.
You can pray in tears.
You can grow in silence.
You can trust while still trembling.
Faith is not the absence of feeling; it’s choosing to follow God through the feeling.
You’re Not Failing, You’re Becoming
Emotional maturity doesn’t mean you won’t feel intense things. It means you begin to respond instead of react. You begin to pause, pray, process, and press forward even when it’s messy.
So please don’t be hard on yourself.
Don’t think your tears make you faithless.
Don’t let the enemy shame you for being real.
You are allowed to feel and still be faithful.
Reflection Questions for the Week
- What emotion have I been hiding from God lately?
- Am I honest with Him in prayer, or do I only bring the “neat” parts?
- What truth from Scripture do I need to speak over how I feel right now?
Pray With Me
Dear Jesus,
Thank You for loving me exactly as I am. Help me not to hide from You when I feel overwhelmed, sad, or anxious. Teach me that You’re not scared of my emotions. You understand them. You created them. Give me the strength to bring everything to You, especially the messy stuff. And help me believe that I can feel deeply and still walk faithfully. Amen.
With love and honesty,
Your Sister in Christ
