The ancient town of Oyo came alive on 20th of July, 2025 as the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, marked his 50th birthday and 19th wedding anniversary with a grand Thanksgiving Mass at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Cathedral, Oyo. The spiritually uplifting celebration brought together Royalty, Clergy, Government Officials, and dignitaries from across Yorubaland in a joyous expression of gratitude to God.

The Solemn Mass was celebrated by the Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Ibadan, Most Rev. Gabriel ‘Leke Abegunrin, who stood in for Bishop Emmanuel Badejo of the Catholic Diocese of Oyo, who was unavoidably absent. Archbishop Abegunrin was joined at the altar by other priests, including Monsignor Anthony Olawumi, Rev. Fr. Boniface Wuraola (Vicar General of the Diocese), and Rev. Fathers Julius Olayinka (Cathedral Administrator), Samson Ojo, Gabriel Adeleke, and Lawrence Oke.

In his homily, Archbishop Abegunrin commended the Alaafin for choosing to return to God in thanksgiving on such a significant day. “Today is not just about numbers,” he said, “but about acknowledging the faithfulness of the One who gives life and enthrones kings.”

The Archbishop reminded the Monarch that kingship is a divine calling and encouraged him to continue to use his throne as a platform for justice, peace, and service. “Only God chooses kings,” he declared. “You must preach peace to your people, speak up for the poor, and ensure that justice reigns throughout your kingdom.” His Grace declared.

The Prelate also praised Oba Owoade for his humility in attending Mass at the Cathedral, calling it a strong symbol of unity and reverence. “Your coming here today shows that you value every person and respect the sacredness of the Church,” the Archbishop said.

Turning to the congregation, Archbishop Abegunrin called on the people of Oyo to support their Monarch in his efforts to lead and develop the land. “This is a day of thanksgiving,” he said. “But it is also a day of re-dedication for the king and for all of us.”

In his response, the Alaafin expressed profound gratitude to God for the journey of his life, both as a man and as a ruler. He thanked the Church for its continued prayers and partnership with the traditional institution, and called on the clergy and faithful to keep praying for him and his household. “I thank God for the gift of life and the grace to serve,” Oba Owoade said. “I also thank the Church for always standing by us. Please continue to pray for me, my wife, and our kingdom.”

The Monarch further emphasized the importance of religious harmony, calling on all Nigerians to embrace tolerance and mutual respect. “Let there be peace among all religions,” Alaafin urged. “We must learn to live together in love.”

As part of the celebration, Archbishop Abegunrin presented gifts to the Alaafin on behalf of Bishop Emmanuel Badejo. The Cathedral was filled with joy and colour as Yoruba Monarchs, Traditional Chiefs, Political Leaders, and well-wishers turned out in large numbers to honour the king.

The atmosphere combined reverence with cultural pride, as hymns of praise rang through the Cathedral and well-wishers extended their heartfelt congratulations to the Royal Couple.
