Celebrating 65 Years of Faithful Service: A Homage to Claverianum Press, Independent Newspaper, Founding Fathers and Contributors.
Fr. Joseph AKERELE
What is a Newspaper for? – To print the news in truthful perspective, to interpret it without bias, to guide public opinion in rightful thinking, to voice the public conscience of the people.
Rev. Patrick O’Neil, the first Editor of the Newspaper voiced this sense of enduring value in journalism on the eve of Catholic Weekly Independent newspaper’s first Anniversary in 1961. He said;
“Some of our national newspapers are, as the ‘Independent’ said in editorial comment last week, going beyond the bounds of good moral taste. Anyone who tries to deny this is ignoring the evidence which is there for all to see.”
In today's complex and often polarized world, the role of journalism is more crucial than ever. The Independent’s commitment to truth and integrity serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us of the importance of reliable information and thoughtful analysis.
As Claverianum Press prepares to mark a remarkable 65 years in newspaper publication (August 14 1960), the Catholic community and beyond rejoice at the pride of celebrating this extraordinary milestone. For over six decades, the publisher of the Catholic Weekly Independent Newspaper has been a shining example of dedication to faith, journalism, and community service, and we are grateful to God for this.
Since its inception, Independent Newspaper has remained true to its mission of spreading the Gospel values, promoting Catholic teachings, and providing a platform for meaningful discussions on societal issues. Through its pages, the newspaper has shared the insights and perspectives of esteemed contributors, including Late Prof. (Sir). Joseph Obemeata, Rev. Fr. Prof. Anthony Akinwale, Rev. Frs. Richard Omolade and James Ngahy, Dr. S.O.S Alieme, Prof. Richard Aborisade, Chief Ayo Fasoro, Drs Sanwo and GBK Ajayi, Prof M.C. Asuzu, Mr. John Esene, Late Mr Femi Adeogun, Sir Fapounda, Prof. Victoria Ajala, Mr Emmanuel Ogunyale, Prof Francis Ogbimi, Prof. Ogunu, and a host of others, who have enriched the faith and understanding of countless readers.
As we celebrate this milestone, we pay tribute to the past Editors and Contributors (including old and new Columnists) who have played a crucial role in shaping the newspaper's identity and direction. Rev Patrick O’Neil, Sr Mary Lourdes, of St. Peter Claver and a host of many SMA Fathers, Claver brothers and sisters leading to modern time; Chief Ayo Fasoro, Mr Leo Olanipekun, Mr. L. Olagunju, Mr. Folusho Adedigba, Rev. Fr. Felix Adedigba, Late Frs: Toyin Phinhero and Anthony Akiwowo among others, have demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication to the publication's mission. Their commitment to excellence in journalism and faith has been a guiding light to generations of readers.
Claverianum Press has been a veritable platform for catechizing the nation, providing readers with thoughtful reflections, inspiring stories, and informative articles on faith and morality. I remember reading the ‘Obemeata Survey’ as we prepare for the 60th Anniversary of the establishment and that of the Newspaper in the heart of COVID in the year 2,000. The results of that survey highlights the fact that the Independent Newspaper meets and continues to meet the desire of the readers. I also remember being with Fr. Richard Omolade responding to a colleague that Catechesis remains an ongoing activity, and it is evident to those who make use of the values inherent in the print media. Through its pages, the Newspaper has helped to build a stronger, more faithful community, and has played a significant role in promoting the teachings of the Catholic Church.
It is no doubt that journalism faces numerous challenges in a polarized world. Challenges ranging from misinformation and disinformation, Social media algorithms, partisan news outlets, and the pursuit of clicks and views can lead to sensationalized reporting, compromising accuracy and fairness thereby eroding trust and confusing the public.
As Claverianum Press looks to the future, we reaffirm our commitment to excellence in journalism and publishing. We will continue to provide a platform for voices that matter, spark meaningful conversations, and inspire positive change. We will strive to remain faithful to our mission, while embracing new challenges and opportunities in the publishing industry.
We express our deepest gratitude to Almighty God, our founding Fathers (Bishop Richard Finn, Archbishop Emeritus Alaba Job, and Archbishop Gabriel ’Leke Abegunrin), past Editors, Board Members, Seasoned Administrators, Indefatigable Columnists, hosts of reporters and contributors, workers and readers who have supported Claverianum Press over the years. Your contributions have been invaluable, and we are grateful for your trust and loyalty. We also acknowledge the unwavering support of the Catholic community, who have seen the value in our mission and have stood with us through the years.
As we celebrate this consistent and significant milestone, we are reminded of the power of journalism, words in print and communication to shape society and inspire positive change. Claverianum Press remains committed to its mission, and we look forward to continuing to serve the community with integrity, faith, and excellence. We pray that God will continue to guide and bless our efforts, as we strive to build a brighter future for generations to come, Amen.
