Church of the Ascension Celebrates Feast of Grandparents and the Elderly
Church of the Ascension, Bodija, Ibadan, Oyo State has joined Catholics worldwide in commemorating the Feast of Grandparents and the Elderly, a day dedicated to honouring the invaluable role of grandparents in the Church and society.
The celebration, held on Sunday, July 27, 2025, was marked with the Mass, which was celebrated by the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Francis Awotoye.
In his homily, Fr. Awotoye highlighted the enduring faith and wisdom of grandparents, noting that they are pillars of prayers and tradition, who bridge generations. He charged them not to shy away from telling the younger generations the bitter truth at all times to make them better persons in life. The priest also appreciated them for their immense contributions to the development of the Parish over the years.
Highlight of the occasion was the presentation of meritorious awards to the grandparents and aged persons in recognition of their dedication, valuable and long-standing service to the Parish.
Fr. Awotoye personally presented the awards to the recipients for what he described as their “unwavering commitment to the vineyard of God”. The Parish Priest was assisted at the occasion by the Chairman, Parish Pastoral Council, Prof. Nnamdi Jibiri; and President, Parish Laity Council, Dr. Adewale Kupoluyi.
The Parish equally commissioned new altar servers. The young altar servers, who dressed beautifully in their uniforms, took their oath of office, and pledged to serve with reverence and dedication to God.
Similarly, a newly-installed Catechist for the Archdiocese, Mrs. Olufunmilayo Kupoluyi was formally received, as she equally had her thanksgiving during the Mass.
