The Education Committee of the Catholic Church of the Ascension, Bodija, has organized a career talk aimed at guiding secondary school students in their academic and career choices.

At the occasion, the Assistant Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Peace Jemibor, welcomed both speakers and students, urging them to listen attentively and gain from the wealth of knowledge made available to them.

The session featured distinguished speakers, including Prof. Ike Nwazuoke from the Department of Special Education, Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan, and Mr. Olubunmi Elijah, the Admissions Officer representative at the University of Ibadan.

Both speakers offered practical advice on subjects combinations required for university admission, courses with strong career prospects, and strategies for academic success. They emphasized the importance of time management, goal setting, and distraction control measures in achieving excellence.

Prof. Nwazuoke introduced students to the GOHAC principle, an acronym for GO (God), HA (Hard Work), and C (Creativity - thinking outside the box). He noted that true success is a blend of spirituality, diligence, and innovation.

Students were cautioned against poor study habits and excessive use of social media platforms such as Instagram and WhatsApp, which often lead to distraction. They were further advised not to take mobile phones into classrooms to ensure maximum concentration.

Drawing from the University of Ibadan’s experience, the speakers noted that some students, who scored high marks in the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examinations, still struggled academically after admission because they could not effectively manage their time or adapt to the challenges of higher learning.

The event underscored the Church’s commitment to youth development, equipping students with the tools to make informed career choices and to excel academically and personally.
