BUILDING UNITY AND TEAMWORK: A CALL TO CATHOLIC YOUTH.
Vincent OBANIYI, Communication Officer, Catholic Diocese of Oyo.
In a world often marked by division, conflict, and competition, the Catholic Church continues to call her youth to be witnesses of unity and instruments of peace. The strength of the Church lies not in isolated individuals but in communities that live and work together as one body in Christ. For Catholic youth, this call is not abstract—it is deeply practical and urgent, shaping how they live, serve, and lead in today’s society.
St. Paul’s words to the Corinthians remain timeless: “For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ” (1 Corinthians 12:12). The Apostle reminds us that teamwork is not an optional quality of Christian life; it is central to our identity as members of the Body of Christ.
Unity Rooted in the Eucharist
At the heart of Catholic unity is the Eucharist. Every Mass is a visible reminder that though we come from different homes, backgrounds, and experiences, we are gathered at one table, nourished by one Lord. From this sacred mystery flows the strength to live together in harmony and to collaborate in love.
Unity and teamwork begin in prayer and extend into action. A parish youth choir harmonizing their voices during liturgy, a group of altar servers working together in reverence, or a diocesan youth gathering where ideas and talents blend to create something beautiful—all these moments are signs of Christ’s presence in our midst.
Practical Examples in Daily Life
Beyond the sanctuary, Catholic youth are called to embody teamwork in every setting. A volleyball team supporting one another on the court, not only to win but also to build friendship and discipline, reflects Christian unity in action. In schools, when students collaborate on projects with honesty and respect, they are learning to value each other’s gifts. In parishes, when youth come together to organize harvest celebrations, retreats, or charity drives for the needy, they show that the Gospel thrives in cooperation.
Teamwork is also a vital response to the challenges facing Nigeria and the wider world. From insecurity and unemployment to moral decline, the youth are often the first to feel the effects. But by standing together—sharing ideas, volunteering, and working for peace—Catholic youth can become agents of change and hope.
Unity as Witness
The mission of Catholic youth does not end with themselves. In a fractured society where tribalism, selfish ambition, and social media rivalries divide many, unity among young Catholics is a powerful witness. Christ’s prayer in John 17:21—“That they may all be one”—is not merely for the Church but for the whole world. When young people choose forgiveness over revenge, dialogue over gossip, and teamwork over unhealthy competition, they preach the Gospel louder than words.
Overcoming Obstacles to Teamwork
Of course, unity is not automatic. Challenges such as pride, envy, lack of communication, and distrust often stand in the way. Building teamwork requires humility, patience, and sacrifice. It calls for leaders who serve, not dominate, and members who listen as much as they speak. The saints give us examples: St. John Bosco gathered young people into oratories where prayer, play, and learning went hand in hand; Blessed Carlo Acutis used his gifts in technology to connect others to the Eucharist; St. Kizito of Uganda showed courage in standing with his fellow martyrs.
A Call to Action
As Catholic youth, the challenge is clear: to be peacemakers, bridge builders, and true disciples of Christ in a divided world. Teamwork is not just for the sports field or the parish project—it is a lifestyle of communion. No one is too small to contribute, and no one is too great to serve.
In a time when our nation and Church need unity more than ever, Catholic youth are invited to rise to the occasion. By embracing teamwork, they will not only strengthen their parishes and dioceses but also bring the light of Christ to a society longing for harmony.
Let us echo the words of the Psalmist: “How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!” (Psalm 133:1). Truly, in unity and teamwork, we find joy, strength, and the path to holiness.
