The Catholic Women Organization of Nigeria (CWON) of St. Peter Catholic Church, Iganmode Road, in the Abeokuta Diocese, Ogun State, gathered at the Marian Grotto on Saturday, August 1, 2026, for its monthly First Saturday Prayer Meeting, themed "A Day with Mary."
Speaking during the programme, the Parish CWON President, Mrs. Nkwocha Uchenna, said the initiative, which is already practised in several parishes across the country, including Port Harcourt, Lagos and Abuja, is aimed at deepening the spiritual lives of women through the recitation of the Holy Rosary, faith formation, and teachings on marriage, family life and the Catholic faith.
According to her, the monthly gathering also serves as a platform to educate women about the mission and activities of the CWON while helping newcomers, especially those from other Christian denominations, to understand and embrace Catholic devotional practices.
Mrs. Nkwocha noted that the programme has evolved significantly over the years. She expressed appreciation to the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Clement Ajibola Ashade, for his unwavering support and encouragement, noting that he has consistently urged the women to remain steadfast in their devotion and has always made himself available whenever they require pastoral guidance.
Commenting on the occasional low turnout at the monthly prayer meeting, the CWON President expressed optimism that attendance would improve through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She disclosed that several women have already testified to the spiritual benefits and graces they have received through their participation in the First Saturday devotion, adding that such testimonies would encourage more members to take the programme seriously.
The First Saturday Prayer Meeting forms part of the Catholic Church's devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and seeks to foster spiritual renewal, strengthen family life, and deepen the faith of Catholic women through prayer, reflection and fellowship.
