Imitate Individuals that are Doing Well, Archbishop Abegunrin Advises IBCYON

The Catholic Archbishop of Ibadan, Most Rev. Gabriel ‘Leke Abegunrin has advised members of Ibadan Catholic Youth Organization of Nigeria (IBCYON) to imitate individuals that are doing well in their various endeavours and not those that are engaging in evil. His Grace gave this advice during the 2026 Harvest of Gratitude, Luncheon/Fundraising with the theme: “Love one another with mutual affection, Outdo one another in showing honour.” (Romans 12:10) at Seat of Wisdom, University of Ibadan on Sunday, 27th September, 2026.

The thanksgiving Mass, presided over by the Archbishop also had the IBCYON Chaplains: Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Eseola, Rev. Fr. Aime Bienvenue Lalsaga, MAFR; Chaplain of Seat of Wisdom/Archdiocesan Chancellor, Very Rev. Fr. Anthony Omolade and Rev. Fr. Cyprian Atin Avong, Isch, concelebrating.

Present at the celebration also included Rev. Fr. Gabriel Azeez, Chaplain; Rev. Sr. Elizabeth Tadafe, OP, Chaplain and other Srs from Dominican Community and Jesus the Saviour Congregation.

The Archbishop also noted at the occasion that youth of today, unlike in the past could manage themselves because of Artificial intelligence (AI). He, however, cautioned against misuse of AI. His Grace also urged the youths never to wait until they have million before they cultivate the habit of giving but give whatever they have; make themselves available, join volunteer groups; study hard to have high grade; pray and trust in God; not to deceive anyone; be humble enough; take good care of their families and above all, participate in politics. “We want you in politics. You say politics is bad, go and repair it.” The Archbishop toll the youths.

The Archbishop going further admonished the youths against creation of enemy, oppression of other languages; (citing the recent election in AICWO as an example), but instead see everyone as one for the future is theirs.

Other invited guests included Hon. Oseni Abas (Candidate for the Oyo South Senatorial District in the coming 2027 General Elections; Mr John Alamu; AICMO President, Sir Felix Adoroh; immediate past AICWO President, Lady Clara Oke; current AICWO President, Amb. (Mrs) Edith Isidahomen; Mr Tolu Adedeji of JDPC and many others, who gave their goodwill messages and also pledged financial supports to the group. The Guests also advised the youths on the need to invest part of their income rather than looking for those to help them always, not to shy when giving an opportunity, and not to waste any available opportunity.  

Earlier in his homily during the Mass, Rev. Fr. Cyprian Atin Avong, Isch has enjoyed the youths to make their special harvest overflows. Using the example of the story of the two sons and their father in the Gospel reading (Matthew 21: 28-32), the homilist stated that it is only when they are able to understand and love their brothers and sisters that one can say we have CYON in this Archdiocese.

The priest going further said many today have lost hope and do not love themselves talk less of loving their brothers and sisters. “God is however a loving father, who loves a new beginning. He is rich in mercy, love and compassion. You need not grow old before becoming a serious Catholic. If ready to make a U-turn, do not wait till tomorrow. The ultimate harvest gift you can offer is yourselves.” Fr Cyprian advised and also enjoyed the youths to always run to Mother Mary for her intercession.

The Archbishop prayed and blessed all before thanksgiving were made on deanery basis, followed by the committee, invited guests and officiating ministers. It was wonderful to behold as all danced forward happy and glad.

The gathering was also entertained by different groups with dance, parade, comedy by ‘Baba Risket’ etc.

One of the IBCYON Chaplains, Rev. Fr. Emmanuel Eseola disclosed that the year 2026 harvest has in focus spiritual, human and education empowerment development for the youths of the Archdiocese. The Chaplains, Committee and the entire youths of the Archdiocese appreciated everyone for the supports given and their presence at the thanksgiving Mass, promising to use whatever assistance received for the purpose it was meant.
