Becoming a Girl That Hears from God in a Noisy World
Dear Sisters,
How often do you wish God would just speak to you in a loud, clear voice? Life is noisy—social media notifications, school pressures, family expectations, and endless distractions. With so many voices competing for your attention, how can you hear God's voice?
The good news is that God still speaks. The real question is: Are you listening? Jesus said, "My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me" (John 10:27). This means that hearing God is not reserved for a select few—it is for everyone willing to listen, including you.
The Noise That Drowns out God’s Voice
One reason you struggle to hear God is the constant noise around you. Sometimes, the noise is external—your phone, music, friends, and responsibilities. Other times, it is internal—your fears, anxieties, and self-doubt.
Sister, if you truly desire to hear from God, you must make room for Him. Just like in any relationship, you cannot expect to recognize someone’s voice if you never spend time with them.
Practical Ways to Grow in Prayer and Discernment
Here are some practical ways to tune out the noise and sharpen your ability to hear God.
1. Make Prayer a Daily Habit
Prayer is a conversation, not a monologue. Sometimes, you treat prayer as a task—just listing your requests and moving on. But imagine if a friend only talked at you without ever listening.
Try this: Set aside at least 10 minutes daily for quiet prayer—not just speaking, but also listening. You can start with:
Thanksgiving: Acknowledge God’s goodness.
Repentance: Ask for forgiveness.
Requests: Bring your needs to Him.
Silence: Sit quietly and listen.
At first, you may not hear anything. That’s okay. Just like a radio, you need to tune in consistently before you start picking up the right frequency.
2. Read the Bible with Expectation
God’s primary way of speaking is through His Word. If you struggle to know His will, start with Scripture. The Bible is full of wisdom for every situation.
A practical tip: Before reading, pray, "Lord, speak to me through Your Word." Then, read slowly and pay attention to what stands out. That might be God speaking to you!
3. Pay Attention to Inner Promptings
Have you ever felt a strong nudge to do something—maybe to check on a friend, avoid a certain situation, or take a step of faith? That could be the Holy Spirit leading you.
God often speaks through inner convictions. But how do you know if it's truly God? Ask yourself:
Does this align with Scripture? God will never tell you something that contradicts His Word.
Does it bring peace or confusion? God’s voice brings peace, even if the step is challenging.
Does it push me toward righteousness? If it leads you closer to God, it’s likely from Him.
4. Reduce Unnecessary Noise
If you never take a break from your phone, social media, or constant entertainment, when will you hear God?
Try this: Take a 24-hour social media break and use that time to pray, read journal, or read the Bible. You might be surprised at how much clearer God’s voice becomes.
5. Seek Wise Counsel
Sometimes, God speaks through people—Priests, Mentors or trusted friends. Proverbs 11:14 says, "Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counsellors there is safety." When you’re unsure, seek advice from spiritually mature people who will point you toward God.
Your Challenge This Week?
Sister, God is always speaking, are you listening? This week, take one step toward hearing Him better. Whether it's setting aside quiet prayer time, reading the Bible with expectation, or taking a social media fast, do something that clears the noise.
Remember, you are a beautiful, Godly, focused, and confident young woman—and God longs to guide you in every area of your life. Make space for His voice, and you will hear Him more clearly than ever before.
With love and prayers,
Your Big Sister in Christ.
