CHURCH PROSTITUTION.
Before your mind starts running wild, I do not mean that kind of prostitute. There are many types of prostitution beyond the one you know. You’ll see what I mean soon. But first, hop in, let me take you on my ride of experience.
We got into a new apartment with my mother and other siblings many years ago and you know how it is, new faces, curious glances, friendly smiles, and one or two overzealous neighbours who want to know everything about your life within the first hour of arrival.
One of such was our new neighbour an overly friendly woman in her mid 30s. The first conversation we had started with: “Which Church do you attend?” I told her, “I’m Catholic.”
She clapped her hands together and said,
“Ah! I was once Catholic too, but you people don’t study the Bible. Na so I waka comot.”
I smiled politely and continued my way.
A few days later, she saw me on my way out and invited me to Mountain of Fire. “Come and see raw power!” she said. Two weeks later, she had “seen enough.” Now she was attending Deeper Life. She said they’re the ones who are really holy. Fast-forward to the next month, She was now dancing and clapping with the Cherubim and Seraphim (Aladura) brethren. “That is where the Spirit is at work,” she said. Not too long after, she was already testifying at Olumba Olumba. “I saw something there I’ve never seen in my life!” And from her tone, I could tell, she might join the Muslims next, if she hears of a miracle there. Every time she switched Churches, she’d announce why:
“This one prays more.”
“That one gives more visions.”
“This one allows me to wear trousers.”
“That one lets me marry two husbands.”
She had a reason for every new fire she was chasing.
Sometimes, she would stop me outside just to give testimonies about her new Church of the week. One day it was: “Ah! This pastor is heavily anointed! He told me my full name without me talking!” Another day: “That prophet is the latest vessel God is using in town!” And just when I thought she had found her final bus stop she would switch again.
One bright Sunday morning, I saw her again, this time in our Church, the Catholic Church. She sat quietly at the back, like someone who had finally arrived. After Mass, she ran into me outside and said, "You won’t believe what I heard! Somebody testified that the priest just prayed over her case and the thing disappeared like that!"
She was bubbling with excitement. But from the way she talked, I could tell it was not devotion that brought her. It wasn’t faith. It was just another attempt… another experiment.
It was both amusing and sad. Because deep down, I realized she wasn’t searching for God. She was searching for magic. Like many others, she had mistaken faith for fortune-telling, and spirituality for stage performance. And the scariest part? Such people are multiplying by day. This trend of Church prostitution has become rampant. People now treat Churches like try-your-luck centres. They hop around like spiritual tourists, tasting doctrines like samplers in a market.
And in trying to please them, some priests and pastors have started bending. They now feel pressured to “perform,” To prove that they too carry fire. Just so they won’t lose members to the next “hot man of God” in town.
They prophesy what God never said, stage miracles He never performed, and preach messages He never sent just to pull in, and keep the crowd.
Brethren, God honours relationship. He does not jump from denomination to denomination. He waits for you to be still and know that He is God. We jump from one "Healing Mass" to another. One crusade to another. One “anointing service” to the next “mantle night.” Yet, we still feel dry inside. Why? Because God doesn’t honour movement. He honours *RELATIONSHIP*.
He does not follow you from one prayer house to another. He waits for you to be still and know that He is God.
As we celebrate Easter, My neighbor mirrors what many of us Christians have become. Always searching. Never settling. Consuming spirituality like fast food. It’s time we stop this Church prostitution, and start building roots, not wings. Let us remain with Jesus even at death and crucifixion, because His resurrection is our light.
True faith is not in running around for solutions. It is in staying with God even when He seems silent. Because the more you run, the more you’ll be misled. But if you stay, God will surely meet you wherever you are. And His light will lighten all that is dark in us.
HAPPY EASTER TO YOU ALL!!!
