GOLDEN JUBILEE CELEBRATION OF REV. FR. DR. JOSEPH ADEGBOYEGA ORIYOMI, JCD
Michael Adedayo OMONIJO
Saturday, May 10, 2025, marked a milestone in the life of the Parish Priest of the Catholic Church of the Assumption, Oko Bale, Ota, Rev. Fr. Dr. Joseph Adegboyega Oriyomi, JCD—as he celebrated his Golden Jubilee. The air was filled with joy and gratitude as the priest, who turned 50, celebrated with a Solemn Thanksgiving Mass, surrounded by parishioners, friends, and family.
Fr. Oriyomi, who was also the Chief Celebrant at the Mass, rendered heartfelt praises to God for His mercy, guidance, and unending goodness throughout the journey of his life. Drawing inspiration from the responsorial Psalm of the day, "How can I repay the Lord for all His goodness to me?" the celebrant reflected deeply on God’s grace and favour upon his life.
During his homily, he shared personal reflections of his early life—his childhood, family upbringing, and the pivotal roles played by his parents, particularly his late mother, whose memory he honoured with emotion and reverence. He acknowledged his siblings for their love and support, recalling fond memories that shaped his path to the priesthood.
A significant part of his reflection included his experiences in Italy during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. He recounted the harrowing days when he had to preside over burial rites almost daily, an experience he described as spiritually and emotionally tasking. Yet, even in those dark moments, God’s presence and strength kept him going.
The celebration was graced by his family members, though his elder brother, Rev. Fr. Dr. Emmanuel Abiodun Oriyomi—Vicar General of the Catholic Diocese of Abeokuta—was unavoidably absent due to Church responsibilities, nonetheless, his presence was deeply felt as he was well represented.
Fr. Oriyomi holds the unique honour of being the first parish priest of the newly created Catholic Church of the Assumption, Oko Bale, which was inaugurated as a parish on April 4, 2024. His pastoral journey spans two decades, having been ordained alongside two others 20 years ago. Prior to his current assignment, he served faithfully at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Ilara, and St. Anne's Catholic Church, Ibara, among others.
His academic pursuit led him to Rome, Italy, where he spent seven years studying and eventually earned a Doctorate in Canon Law (JCD).
The celebration did not end at the altar. It continued with a vibrant reception where guests were entertained with music, dance, and cultural displays. A beautifully decorated birthday cake was cut, and well-wishers presented gifts to honour the milestone celebrant. The atmosphere was one of gratitude, laughter, and shared memories.
The parishioners of the Catholic Church of the Assumption, Oko Bale, and the larger Catholic community in Ota joined in celebrating a priest whose life has been a testament to dedication, learning, sacrifice, and grace.
Happy 50th Birthday, Fr. Oriyomi!
