The Most Precious Blood of Christ.
Dr. Helen Titilola OLOJEDE
Do you know that July in the Catholic tradition is dedicated to the Precious Blood of Christ? If I knew this, I only remembered a few days ago, so you are not alone if you didn't know before reading this column. It is a devotion rich in theological depth and historical significance. This focus invites us as lay faithful to meditate more intentionally on the redemptive power and sacrificial love embodied in Christ’s blood, which was poured out for the salvation of humanity. While the devotion can be traced to the earliest Christian reverence for Christ’s Passion, it gained more structured expression in the Church’s liturgical life over the centuries, culminating in its official recognition by Pope Pius IX in the 19th century.
The devotion to the Precious Blood is rooted in Scripture and the sacraments. In the New Testament, Christ’s blood is portrayed as the price of redemption, a covenantal seal, and a means of purification and reconciliation with God. At the Last Supper, Jesus offered the chalice to His disciples, saying, “This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” This act foreshadowed His Passion and established a new covenant in His blood, a theme that runs throughout Christian theology and worship, especially in the Eucharist.
At every Mass, we commemorate this sacrifice, believing that the wine consecrated on the altar becomes the very blood of Christ, shed on Calvary, yet offered anew in an unbloody manner for the life of the world.
The month of July, therefore, becomes a time to deepen our awareness of the mystery and mercy represented by the Precious Blood. It is not merely a pious sentiment but a call to contemplate the cost of redemption and the extent of divine love. This spiritual focus encourages both personal and communal acts of reparation, gratitude, and conversion. During this month, we can engage in special prayers such as the Litany of the Precious Blood, which reflects on the various ways Christ’s blood sanctifies, protects, and redeems. These devotions are not ends in themselves but serve to draw us more closely into the mystery of the Cross and into solidarity with those who suffer.
Historically, the Church has also connected this devotion with prayers for peace, especially during times of violence and persecution. The blood of Christ is seen as a source of hope and healing, particularly in a world still marred by division and injustice. This is especially apt for our country, Nigeria, marred by bloodshed, hardships, and division.
Through the Most Precious Blood of Christ, may God heal our land and restore His peace. Amen.
