CAN YOU STOP AND THINK FOR A MOMENT
S.O.S ALIEME
This is a wake-up call to all well-meaning Nigerians!!! Since the amalgamation of Northern and Southern Nigeria by Lord Lugard in 1914, the country has being in existence. But by October 1st, 1960 Nigeria gained her independence and from then till now by calculation the country is 65 years old. All these years, Nigeria has been governed by both military and civilians. It is pertinent to note that Nigerians never had it rosy in terms of good governance whether from the military or from the civilians called politicians. The weaponisation of poverty and education has been the weapon by which our so called rulers use to make people not to think deeply on how the economic, political, religious, and cultural problems can be solved.
The past and present governments continue to make life so difficult for Nigerians and when you tend to ask why it is like this, they tend to tell you lies and deceive you that all is well. Nigerian politicians have made son to go against the father, daughter against the mother, people fighting against their kinsmen, wife against the husband, and husband against the wife. Someone promising us heaven here on earth.
All social infrastructures are moribund in Nigeria. No electricity, no water, no hospitals, schools are for the rich, the elites in the North have refused to send their children and wards to school. Why!!! They are doing it intentionally because education is light and this children should not see the light so that they won’t be able to ask questions. Ninety-nine percent of Nigerian politicians do not get into politics because they have something to offer the people, but to butter their bread; for their own self-interest. The unfortunate situation in Nigeria today is that in politics people come to power in order to enrich themselves, not to develop the country. This is our problem. The excessive personalisation of the commonwealth of the country by a few individuals has made Nigeria emerge as the country with the highest number of poor people.
Corruption has eaten deep into the nation’s fabric. Presently, so many corrupt practices by some of our leaders in various capacities have been making wave over the air. Corruption has gone to the extent that even a cleaner in the office who is not lettered understands the language. This is very disturbing; it creates a piteous situation for the nation. Honestly it is worrisome. These combined together to keep us in the position we are today. Although 65 years of independence may be a fraction in the life of a country, it is still enough for us to have fixed or reduce to the barest minimum all the problems if really we are a serious country.
All that is needed is simply to put our efforts together by putting round pegs in round holes. It is puzzling to note that at this stage of the nation’s life, the country is still battling to fix electricity, unemployment, infrastructure, healthcare, education and even youth empowerment. Independence is expected to free us from all forms of slavery and dictatorship but what we are witnessing is modern day slavery. During elections, politicians venture into vote buying. The highest bidder wins the election. Can’t Nigerians stop and think for a moment.
This message goes to the Southerners, to the Northerners, to the Muslims and to the Christians. To the Fulani, Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, Ijaw, Tiv, Kanuri, Ibibio and every other tribe across this land called Nigeria. Wake up. How long shall we continue to let politicians feed us lies, manipulate our emotions, and divide us with propaganda, while they sit comfortably, protected, and untouched? Nigeria was not created by their ancestors. They met it here. They lived on it. They were buried in it. But they did not create it. This land existed before them, and it will remain after us. You are shouting “ancestral land” over a soil your ancestors neither designed nor were consulted about when God formed it. Why are we shedding blood over ground that will eventually cover us all? No tribe owns Nigeria. No religion owns Nigeria. No region owns Nigeria.
Nigeria belongs to every Nigerian, whether you like their language, their culture, their faith, or not. Stop killing in the name of land. Stop hating in the name of tribe. Stop killing in the name of religion. Stop fighting battles designed by politicians who will never send their own children to die. Open your eyes. When violence erupts, it is not the politician’s son that dies. It is not the governor’s daughter that is displaced. It is not the senator’s family shop that gets burned.
It is you. It is your brother. It is your neighbour. And when everything is destroyed, those same politicians, even the ones from your own tribe, will move on with security escorts and new alliances, while you bury your loved ones and count your losses. Be wise. The moment we truly accept that Nigeria belongs to all of us, peace will no longer be a dream, it will be our reality. But if we continue screaming “ancestral ownership” while spilling innocent blood, expect nothing but deeper wounds, greater division, and endless regret. Unity is not weakness. Coexistence is not surrender. Peace is not defeat. Nigeria is bigger than tribe. Bigger than religion. Bigger than politics. Choose wisdom over manipulation. Choose humanity over propaganda. Choose Nigeria over division.
NIGERIA IS NOT YOUR ANCESTOR’S PROPERTY - IT IS OUR COLLECTIVE DESTINY
One nation. One destiny.
God Bless Nigeria!!!
