Rosary Miracle at Hiroshima
Dr. Helen Titilola OLOJEDE
It is May, and it is May devotion. Despite that, I started a series on the fruits of the Holy Spirit in preparation for Pentecost. I am going to suspend that discussion this week to highlight a miracle of the Holy Rosary that left me awestruck and bolstered my faith, and which stirred me to take this year’s May devotion very seriously. Have you heard of the Rosary Miracle at Hiroshima?
The account of the Rosary miracle at Hiroshima centres on a small community of Jesuit priests who lived near the site where the atomic bomb exploded in 1945. Despite being only a short distance from the epicentre, they survived the blast with minimal injuries, while vast numbers of people around them perished instantly. Their residence was largely destroyed, and yet they lived through the devastation that levelled the entire city. What is especially striking is that, in the years that followed, medical examinations reportedly found no lasting effects of radiation on their bodies, something that puzzled doctors and scientists alike. (Fatima Center) This extraordinary survival became widely associated with their spiritual life, particularly their deep devotion to the Rosary and their commitment to living the message of Our Lady of Fatima.
According to their own testimony, the priests attributed their preservation not to chance, but to their daily practice of the Holy Rosary. They lived a disciplined spiritual life, praying together faithfully and entrusting themselves to the protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
One of the survivors, Fr Hubert Schiffer, later explained that they believed they were spared because they were living the Fatima message, which includes daily recitation of the Rosary. Their experience was seen as a powerful witness to the spiritual efficacy of this devotion, especially in times of extreme danger and uncertainty. In a context where human power had unleashed unprecedented destruction, their survival pointed to a higher form of protection rooted in faith and prayer.
For me, and for many Catholics, and I hope it is for you too, this event has come to symbolize the profound spiritual power of the Holy Rosary. It is not merely a repetition of prayers, but a meditative encounter with the life of Christ through the intercession of Mary.
The Rosary has long been encouraged within the Church as a source of peace, protection, and perseverance, especially in times of crisis. The Hiroshima account reinforces this belief by offering a concrete example of faith sustained under the most severe trial. It suggests that the Rosary is not only a personal devotion but also a means through which divine grace can act in the world.
May Our Lady of the Holy Rosary continue to intercede for us!
